Laura Owsley with Lou Duncan, past national president, at the 2008 Confirmed Conventionite Event

Today is July 10, 2012.

In less than 24 hours 780 sisters and guests will descend upon The Woodlands, Texas, for the 85th Sigma Kappa Convention. So many emotions are running through my head – excitement, anxiousness, and pride, just to name a few.

It seemed at one time like this day would never come, but the convention website kept me on track – 89 days; 35 days; 5 days; and now ONE DAY!

I love everything about Convention, so I developed a list of Top 10 Things I Love About Sigma Kappa Convention!

  1. The meeting of the Grand Chapter – all of the delegates together conducting the business of the Sorority.
  2. ReconnΣKting with sisters I have met over the years but haven’t seen for a while. Can’t wait to catch up!
  3. Meeting new sisters from across the world (yes, our European Alumnae Chapter attends!)
  4. Celebrating with chapters who have achieved excellence during the past biennium.
  5. Attending workshops presented by talented sisters and outside facilitators who provide us with ways to strengthen our membership and move Sigma Kappa forward.
  6. Attending Initiation with 700+ sisters, singing the same songs and listening to the same Ritual that has been passed down to us to uphold and treasure. It’s an amazing experience.
  7. Getting dressed up in a costume for Confirmed Conventionite and having fun with sisters of all ages. The Deans (those who have attended 10 or more Conventions) are hilarious! I’m not sure the collegians know what to think about it!
  8. Experiencing a new city. This is my 9th Convention and Sigma Kappa has taken me across the country and back again.
  9. Living in the “Violet Bubble”. Although Sister Angela Guillory, past national president, used this phrase at 2011 COTS, it is so true for Convention, as well – maybe even more so! Eat a lot, sleep a little, and breathe Sigma Kappa for five days. YES!
  10. Sharing the bond of sisterhood with so many talented and inspiring women.

I LOVE Convention and I can’t wait to welcome my sisters to The Woodlands tomorrow!

How many Conventions have you attended? What do you love about Convention? Tell me in the comments!

OMG So sad I am not at Convention this year! Loved the blog post, LO – so many awesome memories at Orlando in 2010 and Indy last summer. Have so much fun and enjoy bonding with all of our sisters! And I better see lots of tweets and facebook updates so I can live vicariously through all of you! 1

LO, loved your blog and you are right on with your top 10! This year, tho, I’d change #8 to read “Welcoming my sisters to my hometown!” Can’t wait to see you and everyone else. Safe travels!

This will be my THIRD convention! I’m so excited about being confirmed! My favorite thing about convention is sharing my experiences with Sigma Kappa with women from all over the country. It reminds me just how much I love this organization and it rejuvenates me in my CPO role. I heart convention!

  4. Rebecca says:

Looking forward to my very first Convention and meeting many new sisters. Your list is great, LO, but one I’d add if the Violet Boutique (but I’m a shopaholic)!

Looking forward to my ninth Convention. Am anxious to see my Sigma Sisters, that I have become friends with, who live in other Cities and States. It’s like a reunion to be able to get together again.
It is a warm and happy feeling to know that tomorrow our Convention will finally begin.

This is my 8th convention and besides everything you listed LO, I love sharing the expereince with those attending for the first time. Whether they are collegians or alumnae, they usually come not understanding the full impact the 5 days in the violet bubble has on you! There are really no words to describe it!
