Happy National Blueberry Month, sisters! This is a hard month to be healthy in because let’s face it, we love to cook out, we love to make our favorite summer dishes, and we love to indulge in those festive red, white and blue desserts. I am going to tell you to go ahead! But I need you to try and follow my lead.

Grilling food is healthy, minus the marinade with lots of sugar and fat. But going without, it can taste less than flavorful. Try a blueberry-infused balsamic vinegar or try the recipe for blueberry chutney found on this website: http://www.blueberrycouncil.org/blueberry-recipes/berry-blueberry-chutney/ You can grill your favorite meat, I am a fan of pork chops with this recipe, and cover it with the sauce. It will pack your meal full of flavor and not leave you packed full of fat.

Our favorite summer dishes often include those fresher than fresh salads–here in the South, anything mayonnaise based. Try this blueberry-cucumber salad as an additional option: http://www.blueberrycouncil.org/blueberry-recipes/blueberry-cucumber-salad/ I am pretty sure that this salad would trump any dish at your barbecue, and if you can’t beat Aunt Sarah’s potato salad, at least you win for “surprisingly delicious” and “prettiest.”

And here is to our favorite, the dessert. Yes, you should eat dessert says the health and fitness blogger. I believe in indulging in moderation and not overeating. I do not believe in skipping dessert, at least have a bite for goodness sakes. This is a dessert that will leave you happy and healthy: Berry Baked Apples http://www.blueberrycouncil.org/blueberry-recipes/berry-baked-apples/

However you choose to spend your summer calorie allotment, use these little delights to add to your menu and offer a healthy alternative to the meals we just can’t resist. All recipes were linked from the US Highbush Blueberry Council. Visit their website here: http://www.blueberrycouncil.org/. They have plenty of information about the health benefits of blueberries as well as a ton of recipes that will surely meet your needs.
